How to read pet lab results without self-diagnosis
How to understand reference intervals, abnormal flags, and trends in a dog’s or cat’s results without diagnosing from one report.
A laboratory report contains measured values, but it does not usually answer by itself which disease an animal has. The same result can have different meanings depending on the signs, physical examination, age, medicines, sample quality, and other investigations.
The owner’s task is not to diagnose from highlighted values. It is to retain the complete report and provide the information needed for clinical interpretation.
A reference interval is not a boundary between health and disease
Reference intervals are usually established using results from a group of clinically healthy animals. They often include approximately 95 percent of that group. A small deviation can therefore occur in a healthy animal.
The chance of finding at least one value outside its interval also increases when many variables are measured at the same time.
Intervals depend on factors such as:
- the laboratory;
- the analyser;
- the method and reagents;
- the animal’s species;
- age;
- sample type;
- measurement units.
A result should primarily be compared with the interval printed on the same laboratory report. A range found online or on another report may not apply.
The clinical picture matters more than a single value
A veterinarian interprets results together with:
- the presenting concerns and their progression;
- physical examination findings;
- age, breed, and body weight;
- diet and water intake;
- current medicines;
- chronic conditions;
- previous results;
- imaging and other diagnostic findings.
A flag stating “high” or “low” does not by itself explain the cause or determine treatment.
Complete blood count
A complete blood count evaluates blood cells, including:
- red blood cells, haemoglobin, and haematocrit;
- white blood cells and their individual types;
- platelets.
These variables are interpreted together. For example, the percentage of one white blood cell type without its absolute count may give a misleading impression.
Automated analysers can also produce flags. A blood smear review may sometimes be required to confirm cell numbers and appearance.
Biochemistry
Biochemical variables reflect different processes, but most are not exclusive to one organ and do not represent a ready-made diagnosis.
Results may be affected by:
- dehydration;
- food intake before sampling;
- stress;
- exercise;
- age and muscle mass;
- medicines;
- damage to blood cells within the sample;
- excess fat within the sample;
- storage and transport conditions.
A change in an enzyme, protein, electrolyte, or metabolic product is therefore interpreted alongside other findings rather than in isolation.
Urinalysis complements blood testing
When the urinary system is being assessed, blood results are often interpreted together with urinalysis.
Relevant information may include:
- urine specific gravity;
- protein;
- glucose;
- ketones;
- blood;
- cells, crystals, and other sediment findings;
- the method and timing of sample collection.
A single blood value may not establish kidney function or the reason for a change without urine testing and the wider clinical context.
Why trends matter
Repeated measurements are often more informative than a single result. When comparing reports, consider:
- whether the same laboratory was used;
- whether the units and methods were the same;
- whether the animal’s condition changed;
- whether treatment was started;
- whether diet or hydration changed;
- how much time passed between tests.
A small stable deviation and a rapidly changing result require different interpretation.
What to prepare for a veterinary discussion
Collect:
- the complete laboratory report;
- the date and laboratory name;
- reference intervals and units;
- information about preparation and sampling time;
- a list of medicines and supplements;
- a concise timeline of signs;
- previous results;
- reports from other investigations.
Do not crop the table or manually rewrite only the highlighted results.
Useful questions include:
- which changes are clinically significant;
- whether the findings may be connected;
- whether sample quality or preparation could have affected the result;
- whether repeat testing is needed;
- which additional information would change the decision;
- which signs would require more urgent care.
What not to do
Do not independently:
- diagnose from one variable;
- start, stop, or change medicines;
- add supplements merely to “correct the result”;
- compare reports from different laboratories without considering their methods;
- ignore the animal’s condition because the report appears relatively reassuring.
If the laboratory has reported a critical result or the animal has signs requiring urgent care, contact a veterinary clinic immediately.
